This week we completed our DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) testing and had our last week of library (check-ins). Please remember to turn in books if you have not done so yet! For the rest of the year and into the summer, I hope you continue to read and practice retelling what you read. I have been notified of a couple summer reading programs that your child can earn prizes for simply reading throughout the summer months. I will attach websites and send home papers, but if you still have questions on this topic I will definitely try to help you find the answer!
- Through Granite School District, your children are offered a free online book checkout (and audio/read-alouds, as well). This is called "Sora" which is an app formerly know as "Overdrive". You need to type in Soraapp.com (or download it). Enter graniteut/Granite School District to set up your school (Robert Frost). The students will enter their username and passwords that they use to log onto all school computers (Username: 9# and Password: 123456). They can immediately start reading and enjoy up to three (3) books at a time. This app is nice because it automatically turns books in after a certain number of days (21?). Check out this online app!
- The 2019 Summer Reading Challenge is through the local libraries. There is a Salt Lake library kickoff on May 31st that you may want to attend as well. Or you can visit your local library and learn more about it, in person. You will need to pick up your reading records and mark them off as you go. When completed, you can earn more books, prizes from a drawing, and tickets to the Natural History Museum of Utah. Also, if you have fines, this will waive up to $5.00 per person, just for signing up! Check out the details on this awesome program!
- Barnes & Noble also has a summer reading program (that now includes teens and adults). They can read books to earn more and more reading materials as they go!
- Read Today is another program, where you can read to earn Bees Tickets, food coupons, and other prizes!
- The Utah State Fair has a program that can earn you free tickets to the fair (in September). You just need to mark your completed reading of books & send them in.
- Kids Read Now & Utah Kids Ready to Read also have some more programs to keep you busy during the summer months! Check all these programs out and see which you'd like to participate in! **Most of these programs have end dates around July 31st. Keep in mind that no late submissions are accepted for any of the programs I have seen, so turn in your logs on or before the given dates. Have a wonderful summer and keep reading!! :)
