This chapter will use key words and math vocabulary to find answers to basic facts and relationships of addition and subtraction. Students will find sums (+) and differences (-) to problems by adding addends together, or subtracting a whole minus a part to find the other part (part-part-whole relationship). Students will use pictures and symbols to add and subtract, in order to find the correct answer. Next, students will count on and count back to find the answer. Number lines and pictures may be other ways to show work when finding the answer to a problem. They will continue to practice doubles facts plus/minus one for quick math fact fluency. They will also review how to "Make a 10" and "Add Multiple Addends" in order to find a sum (+) or difference (-). Addition and subtraction will be related when using fact families. Students will also learn about arrays (rows X columns/number in a row) by finding equal groups and repeated addition patterns. This array practice is the precursor to multiplication in the following (3rd) grade.
