Scholastic Book Order Code: NMKJR
Nightly Reading: Please listen to your child read and learn alongside of them to help them better develop life-long reading and comprehension skills! We ask that each student read for 20(+) minutes each night, in order to strengthen reading fluency skills. To better improve comprehension, please have your child answer "Who, What, When, Where, Why, & How" of what they have just read aloud. They should know the title, what the book is about, and when/where it happened. They should also tell details in order, with transition words (First, Next, Then, After, Finally) to improve their retell.
Writing: In 2nd Grade, we are practicing writing complete sentences, starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark). The students should also be working on creating more fluent sentences, that can go together on a specific topic. The students will also be breaking down sentences into the parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, and etcetera) in order to better understand and learn grammar.
In 3rd Grade, we are practicing writing in complete sentences and paragraphs! The topic sentence and conclusion should be restating the same information. The middle (2nd, 3rd, & 4th) should consist of reasons, evidence, or supporting details to add to the main idea of the paragraph. Whenever possible, students should add details and descriptions to their sentences (adjectives) to make them more interesting and fun to read!
**We are also putting a strong emphasis on neat, properly formed handwriting.
Reading Unit: Our current reading unit covers different stories on: "Live & Learn". We will be discussing different science concepts about force, motion, gravity, earth, planets, and more. Please ask your child what they are learning about, to have them retell recently learned information. This can help to solidify learning and improve understanding of these new concepts.
