In this chapter, students will compare measurement lengths in nonstandard (i.e. blocks & paper clips) and customary units (feet & inches). They should be able to describe an object as shorter or longer than another object. They will begin measurement by using inches (in.) to find an object's length. They will practice using a ruler and starting at the edge, or 0, and going on from there. The students will also practice estimating length in inches, and then matching the length to the nearest inch. Students will continue using addition and subtraction skills in order to solve story problems (in inches). Next, students will learn that 12 inches=1 foot. They will measure objects using both units of measurement. Students will also estimate and match measurements to given objects. After all of this practice in measuring, students will then describe measurements by picking a tool to measure. They may use a ruler, yardstick, or measuring tape to measure various items. Finally, they will learn to display this data by use of a line plot. This is a means of graphing data (measurements) on a number line.
