Students should know the 4 types of angles (right, acute, obtuse, & linear/straight) & what they look like. They should also remember the differences between an endpoint, line, line segment, & ray. Along with lines, students should remember the different types of lines: parallel, perpendicular, & intersecting. They will also learn to classify shapes as being open shapes (gaps) or closed shapes (no gaps), plane shapes (2-D; Flat) with curved lines or straight line segments, as well as identifying shapes by the number of sides. Quadrilaterals are identified as having 4 sides, and polygons have 4(+) sides.
Specifically, a trapezoid has at least one pair of opposite sides that are parallel, while a rhombus has two pairs of opposite sides that are parallel AND four sides of equal lengths. Finally, students will relate shapes, fractions, and area. Shapes will be divided into equal parts, and the area of those parts will be found. *When finding the area of a shape, remember that two triangles are equal to one square unit.
